Become a MoMath volunteer and share your love of math with others!

Integrators: The MoMath High School Volunteer Program
MoMath accepts a limited number of high school students for ongoing volunteer roles during summer vacation and/or from September through June.  This is a unique chance to improve your interpersonal and communication skills, explore mathematical concepts, and learn valuable job skills.  MoMath students interact with visitors on the Museum floor and train with professional educators, interpreters, and managers.  During the school year, this opportunity requires a commitment of approximately one day per week, typically a Saturday or Sunday.  Students who participate during summer vacation commit five days per week.

Communications Manager

The National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) is a growing institution that provides insight into the evolving, creative, human, and aesthetic nature of mathematics to a diverse audience of all ages.  Its interactive exhibits and stimulating programs encourage inquiry, spark curiosity, and reveal the wonders of math.   

MoMath is seeking an experienced communications manager who will manage junior communications staff and be responsible for internal and external communications in support of the Museum’s programs and mission, including sending mass email announcements, updating and maintaining the content of the museum’s website, and managing its social media presence.

This is a full-time permanent position that offers a full suite of benefits. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the sending of electronic communications, including emails promoting events and programs, memoranda, and posts to various social media platforms
  • Manage a busy schedule of regular outreach announcements and specialized communications
  • Prepare posts and communications in support of MoMath programs and events as needed to drive attendance; post events and programs photos and text to social media
  • Edit and prepare MoMath’s monthly email announcement of upcoming events
  • Create web pages and registration pages for all MoMath events
  • Draft and format entries and updates for posting on the website
  • Review MoMath’s website weekly, ensuring that all pages are up-to-date
  • Ensure that external inquiries receive prompt replies
  • Monitor and report on event registration numbers
  • Collaborate with various Museum departments and staff to prepare communications in the voice and style of the museum
  • Track metrics related to communications and provide monthly reports to senior management
  • Ensure a high level of excellence is maintained and that all output of the Communications team adheres to Museum standards   

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five years’ work experience in a relevant role required
  • Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to write flawless professional correspondence
  • Prior management experience strongly preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Excellent grammar, editing, and proofreading ability
  • Demonstrated record of outstanding organization skills, attention to detail, and the ability to reliably juggle and meet multiple deadlines

Educators deliver a variety of MoMath programs, including:

  • Field trip offerings for classes, camps, and other groups that visit the museum
  • In-museum public demonstrations and group activities

Qualifications:

Exhibit Technician/Assistant

MoMath is seeking an experienced exhibit technician or exhibit assistant with a talent for mechanical and electronic maintenance, diagnostics, and troubleshooting to maintain the Museum’s various exhibits and facility in good working order.  Many of the exhibits are highly complex interactives with integrated hardware, firmware, and software.

This opportunity can be either a part-time position or a full-time permanent position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Resolving routine physical and electronic problems in the Museum’s exhibits
  • Making repairs or performing needed maintenance to the Museum’s facility
  • Assisting MoMath senior and technical staff to improve exhibits and make daily progress on outstanding exhibit and/or facility issues
  • Transporting MoMath traveling exhibits to external locations (by minivan), and installing and troubleshooting them
  • Monitoring exhibit and facility status daily, and logging and reviewing issues in MoMath’s tracking system
  • Operating a laser cutter for various Museum fabrication needs (previous laser cutter experience is not a requirement)
  • Sourcing and purchasing materials and equipment
  • Maintaining exhibit maintenance repair and storage facilities in good order
  • Communicating with fabricators and other partners and vendors as needed to speed resolution of outstanding issues

Qualifications

  • Experience with diagnosing and resolving mechanical and electronic issues
  • Experience building, repairing, refinishing, and being generally handy
  • Competency with carpentry, finishing, and power tools
  • A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are required
  • The ability to lift 50 pounds is required
  • Strong communication and organization skills
  • Systems administration experience, though not a requirement, would be useful

Retail Sales Associate

The National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) is a growing institution that provides insight into the evolving, creative, human, and aesthetic nature of mathematics to a diverse audience of all ages.  Its interactive exhibits and stimulating programs encourage inquiry, spark curiosity, and reveal the wonders of math.

MoMath is seeking an enthusiastic and responsible individual with a strong aptitude for customer service to be a sales associate for its retail operations in Additions, the shop at MoMath.

Hours: This is a part-time position that will require flexibility but is anticipated to include 15 to 25 hours per week, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays.  Hours may increase during the holiday season, and the sales associate may also be called upon to cover for special events as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Greet and assist customers in a friendly and professional manner
  • Perform careful sales transactions to ensure accurate cash handling and inventory control
  • Maintain high visual standards by assisting with merchandising, restocking, and cleaning
  • Perform duties related to shipping and receiving
  • Assist with all of the Museum’s retail initiatives

Qualifications:

  • Previous retail experience or related customer service experience is required
  • Experience with museum and/or high-end retail is preferred
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Flexible availability to work weekends and holidays is a strong plus

Assistant Designer

The National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) is a growing institution that provides insight into the evolving, creative, human, and aesthetic nature of mathematics to a diverse audience of all ages.  Its interactive exhibits and stimulating programs encourage inquiry, spark curiosity, and reveal the wonders of math.

MoMath is seeking a creative and skilled assistant designer to help develop its one-of-a-kind exhibits and installations.  The Museum features innovative, interactive, and exploratory exhibits — designed with a sophisticated design sensibility and an inventive use of technology.  The assistant exhibit designer will help develop current and future exhibits and consult with vendors, fabricators, and third parties through all steps of the design and fabrication process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Associate Director / Chief of Design with design tasks associated with current and future exhibits and program materials.
  • Develop 3D computer drawings based on Director’s design and technical lead, from concept sketch through to bid drawings.
  • Create concept renderings for presentation in various formats including slide shows and brochures.
  • Ideate and create visuals of design alternatives.
  • Explore and document design solutions addressing spatial, technical, and structural issues.
  • Devise detailed and coordinate drawing sets for price estimation and fabricator bids.
  • Research materials and equipment.
  • Monitor communications with fabricators.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in exhibit design or related (architectural, interior design, industrial design) required
  • Proficiency with Vectorworks or similar CAD program (MoMath is a Vectorworks office) required; proficiency with other 3D modeling programs that complement Vectorworks is a plus
  • Strong 3D design skills; modeling, rendering, graphics integration
  • Familiarity with Adobe suite of graphic design and publishing programs (most graphic design tasks are handled by MoMath’s graphics designer)
  • Familiarity with the physical properties of typical materials found in exhibits and furnishings
  • Prior experience and familiarity with exhibition design
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with Museum staff and be able to effectively communicate with external partners

Chief of Mathematics

This position will help shape one of America’s major efforts in mathematical outreach to students, teachers, and the public.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Chief of Mathematics will create compelling original content for classes, presentations, and activities that demonstrate the beauty and joy of math. This role will translate the varied areas of mathematics into engaging programs that are accessible to diverse target audiences, including children and adults, ranging from mathematical novices to the mathematically sophisticated.

MoMath’s educational programs include (but are not limited to):

  • Field trip offerings for school classes, camps, and other groups that visit the Museum
  • After-school and weekend math clubs and gifted/enrichment programs

Qualifications:

  • Advanced study at the level of a Ph.D. in Mathematics or a closely allied field, or a near-equivalent level of experience, exposure, and mastery of a wide range of mathematical topics
  • A successful track record developing curricula, activities, and/or programs illustrating the breadth, beauty, vitality, usefulness, and excitement of modern mathematics, geared to a broad public
  • A love of communicating mathematical ideas at all levels of sophistication and understanding to both children and adults in an engaging, meaningful, and accessible manner

Product Developer

The National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) is a growing institution that provides insight into the evolving, creative, human, and aesthetic nature of mathematics to a diverse audience of all ages. Its interactive exhibits and stimulating programs encourage inquiry, spark curiosity, and reveal the wonders of math.

MoMath is seeking a Product Developer to help bring an exclusive series of new mathematical toys and games, inspired by the Museum’s innovative range of exhibits and by the wonder and beauty of mathematics, to market. This is a creative role, and the successful candidate will be expected both to have input into the development of existing ideas and to put forward ideas of his/her own for consideration.

This is a full-time permanent position that offers a full suite of benefits.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Working in collaboration with exhibit designers, mathematics consultants, and technical staff, take initial ideas from concept or prototype form to a final product that is suitable for mass marketing to educational institutions and the general public
  • Identify creative, cost-effective manufacturing solutions to enable the creation of entertaining new games, toys, and puzzles
  • Drive the sourcing and supplier process, including negotiating price and supplier agreements
  • Communicate directly with suppliers and factories to ensure they understand the design requirements and meet quality guidelines and deadlines

Qualifications:

  • History of success as a detail-oriented project manager overseeing the entire product life cycle, from idea to prototype to mass production
  • Proven aptitude to manage complex projects within time and budget constraints
  • A record of producing or conceiving of at least one compelling toy or puzzle, preferably math-related, not currently in commercial production
  • Strong ability to select, negotiate with, and manage contract manufacturers
  • Familiarity with 3D CAD (e.g. SolidWorks/Autodesk Inventor)
  • Experience with rapid prototyping / additive manufacturing preferred

  • Assisting visitors as they explore Museum exhibits
